The market for Pete Alonso is really heating up, with several teams now showing strong interest in the power-hitting first baseman. According to MLB insiders Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the top teams pursuing Alonso. If the Blue Jays manage to sign him, they reportedly want to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as well. The idea is that Alonso and Guerrero could share time playing first base and as designated hitters, which would strengthen Toronto’s batting lineup. Alonso, known for his impressive run production, even led the MLB in RBIs in 2021.
Initially, the Mets seemed likely to re-sign Alonso, but that now seems less certain. Insiders say financial disagreements are creating obstacles, and the Mets have even given Alonso a deadline to make a decision. This suggests they might already be moving on. Recently, they signed Jesse Winker, which could indicate they are preparing for a future without Alonso.
MLB insider Joel Sherman added that while the Mets might still try to re-sign Alonso, they are also considering other options, such as moving younger players into key positions instead of making another big signing. If Alonso doesn’t stay with the Mets, it’s great news for the Blue Jays, but it’s not guaranteed they’ll get him. There’s another mystery team, possibly the Angels, also competing for his signature.
The Blue Jays, who missed out on several big names in recent years, are now desperate to land a star. While the team’s financial situation might complicate things, if the Mets officially drop out of the race, Toronto could have the best chance to sign Alonso. However, nothing is final yet, and the competition is still tough.
